Justice Case was born in Jersey City on Sept. 24, 1877. He received his education at the Paterson Scientific and Classical School, Rutgers Preparatory School, Rutgers College, 1900; New York Law School, 1902. His academic degrees are B. A., Rutgers, 1900; LL.B., New York Law School, 1902', M.A., Rutgers, 1903; LL.D., Rutgers, 1937. He studied law with Alvah A. Clark became an attorney in 1903 and a counsellor in 1907. Until his appointment to the county bench, he practiced law in partnership with Clark.

Justice Case was Judge of the County Courts of Somerset County from 1910 until 1913, when he resigned. He served as a member of the State Senate, 1918-1929, was Republican floor leader in 1919 and president of the Senate in 1920. For a short time in 1920, during a part of the interim between the resignation of Governor Edge and the inauguration of Governor Edwards, Justice Case was Acting Governor. He was a trustee of Rutgers College. He was appointed Supreme Court Justice in January 1929, by Governor Larson and was reappointed by Governor Hoffman in 1936 and by Governor Edison in 1943. In March 1946, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by Governor Edge and served until the dissolution of that court on September 15, 1948. By appointment of Governor Driscoll, he then became the senior associate justice of the new Supreme Court until his retirement in 1952. A resident of Somerville, he died on Sept. 24, 1977, at the age of 84.
