Court Interpreters

Scope of Service

Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 2B:8-1, Interpreting services shall be provided when necessary for cases heard in the Law Division and the Family Part of the Chancery Division. In the Hudson Vicinage we provide court interpreting services, in many languages, for all types of proceedings. However, we prioritize on-the-record proceedings over all support services requests. Additionally, we produce translations of written materials at the request of the judges and/or senior managers.

Our Staff

The Court Interpreters' Unit consists of nine Spanish language interpreters (including one who is also qualified to interpret in Portuguese) who have been approved by the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC). Our interpreters come from diverse cultural, linguistic and educational backgrounds. Currently our staff is comprised of interpreters from the United States, South America, the Caribbean and Spain. The variety of origins represented in our office, proves to be a strength in that it provides expertise in the linguistic challenges that we encounter interpreting court proceedings. Our unit provides interpreting services for nearly 15,000 events annually. Staff Court Interpreters are assigned to cases in the order that the requests are received. Interpreters for all other languages are called for service, as needed, on a contractual basis. All interpreters must be listed on the AOC's registry of approved interpreters in order to be eligible to provide services in court.

How to Request an Interpreter

Court Interpreters may be requested only by court personnel. If a court interpreter is needed for your case, please notify the court staff where your matter is scheduled to be heard. Upon receipt of the request form from the court, we will make the necessary arrangements to provide the appropriate interpreting services.

How to Cancel an Interpreter

In order to avoid having to pay unnecessary cancellation fees, we require that you notify the applicable case management division of any changes to your requests as soon as possible.

When the court has scheduled a matter requiring an interpreter, parties are required to notify the court if the matter settles or is otherwise to be postponed so that the court does not incur unnecessary interpreter fees. A party that fails to notify the court may be assessed the cost of the interpreter. Please contact the division where the case originates.
